Portable Fire Extinguisher Technician Certification

This is NCTC's most involved current certification program. It prepares technicians for broad portable-extinguisher inspection and service work across facilities and fleets. Vehicle mounting and installation will also be offered as a separate specialization so each credential states exactly what the candidate completed. Six required modules combine governing-source decisions, worked field scenarios, repeatable procedures, guided practice, and a graded knowledge check after every lesson.

What the candidate must complete

• Study and complete all six modules in sequence.
• Work through equipment identification, hazard selection, detailed inspection, maintenance boundaries, deficiency control, and recordkeeping procedures.
• Complete a guided field exercise in every module.
• Answer all 18 required module-check questions correctly before the final assessment unlocks.
• Pass a timed, randomized final drawn from the larger approved question bank.
• Receive manual NCTC review before any credential is issued.

Final assessment and retakes

The final assessment draws 20 randomized questions, shuffles answer order, runs under a controlled timer, and requires 80% to pass. Candidates see the exact timer before starting. Question history, answers, timing, and score are retained. A failed attempt locks the exam; the candidate must request and receive NCTC approval before another attempt. The normal maximum is three unless NCTC grants an additional attempt.

References and limits

The program uses original NCTC instruction developed around OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157, the NFPA 10 framework, manufacturer service information, and local requirements. It does not reproduce NFPA standards and does not replace licensing, manufacturer authorization, employer qualification, hands-on authorization for high-risk service, or authority-having-jurisdiction approval.

Credential workflow

Passing the final does not create an automatic certificate. The complete training and exam record goes to NCTC for manual review, and the credential is issued only after final NCTC approval. It belongs to the individual named on it.
