Portable Fire Extinguisher Technician Certification

This is NCTC's more involved certification program. It prepares candidates to identify portable extinguishers, perform a repeatable visual inspection, understand annual-maintenance workflow, recognize unsafe or unsuitable conditions, and create traceable service records.

Program structure

1. Technician scope and safety responsibility
2. Fire classes, ratings, and extinguisher selection
3. Monthly visual inspection
4. Annual maintenance and service workflow
5. Deficiencies, out-of-service decisions, and escalation
6. Records, tags, fleet conditions, and final review

Final assessment

The final exam draws 25 randomized questions from a larger approved bank, shuffles answer order, allows 45 minutes, and requires 80% to pass. Up to three attempts are available unless NCTC authorizes another.

The program uses original NCTC instruction developed around OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157, the NFPA 10 framework, manufacturer service information, and local requirements. It does not reproduce NFPA standards and does not replace licensing, manufacturer authorization, employer qualification, or authority-having-jurisdiction approval.

Credential workflow

Passing the exam places the result into manual NCTC review. The credential is issued only after owner approval and belongs to the individual named on it.
