Fire Extinguisher & Emergency Lighting Technician Certification Course Course Overview

This course provides professional training in the inspection, installation, and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers and emergency lighting systems.
It aligns with all major national fire and safety standards and is suitable for in-house technicians, contractors, and continuing education students seeking technical certification.
Completion of this program demonstrates proficiency in field inspection practices, documentation, and code compliance.

Applicable Codes and Standards

Participants are required to understand and operate in accordance with the following:

  • NFPA 10 – Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers (Selection, installation, inspection, maintenance)
     
  • NFPA 101 – Life Safety Code (Emergency lighting and exit signage testing)
     
  • IFC 2018 – International Fire Code (Section 906 – Fire Protection Equipment; Section 1031 – Egress Illumination)
     
  • OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157 – Portable Fire Extinguishers in General Industry (Employer inspection, maintenance, and training requirements)
     
  • OSHA 29 CFR 1910.37 – Maintenance, Safeguards, and Operational Features for Exit Routes (Lighting and marking)
     
  • DOT FMCSA 49 CFR 393.95 – Emergency Equipment on Commercial Motor Vehicles (Vehicle-mounted extinguisher requirements)
     
  • NJ IFC 2018 Edition and NJ MVC Regulations – Fire equipment requirements for commercial vehicles and facilities in New Jersey
     
  • ADA 2010 Standards for Accessible Design – Mounting-height and protrusion considerations for corridor installations (referenced for accessibility only)
     

Learning Objectives

By the end of the program, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify extinguisher classifications (A, B, C, D, K) and applicable hazards per NFPA 10.
     
  2. Select proper extinguishers and determine mounting height and placement per NFPA 10 § 6.2 – 6.6 and IFC § 906.
     
  3. Perform and document monthly and annual extinguisher inspections per OSHA 1910.157 (e) and NFPA 10 § 7.2 – 7.3.
     
  4. Recognize limitations of in-house servicing and identify procedures requiring certified external service per NFPA 10 § 7.8.
     
  5. Conduct emergency lighting functional tests:
     
    • Monthly 30-second test – NFPA 101 § 7.9.3.1.1 / IFC § 1031.10.3.1
       
    • Annual 90-minute full-duration test – NFPA 101 § 7.9.3.1.2 / IFC § 1031.10.3.2
       

  1. Verify vehicle extinguisher compliance per DOT 49 CFR 393.95 and NJ MVC inspection standards.
     
  2. Apply calibration and tool-control practices consistent with NFPA 10 § 7.3.3 for weighing scales and pressure gauges.
     
  3. Complete documentation, tagging, and verification forms suitable for fire marshal or AHJ review.
